Holy crap, I just got an email from Neil Gaiman.

...that's a surprise.

I wrote off a quick concerned question as to whether or not Neil Gaiman was going to address the whole disgusting Harlan Ellison groping Connie Willis thing, and I got a reply in my Inbox in under fifteen minutes. Bit of a lurch of surprise, looking at my Gmail.

(he basically says, he's not gonna touch this situation with a ten-foot barge-pole, and other women have been accusing him of being "complicit by [my] silence" in Harlan's "public attempt to rape Connie Willis", which is pretty stupid. Under those circumstances I'd find it pretty hard not to be really pissed off.)

Was he even there?

Good lord.

Oh, almost certainly. I don't think he'd miss WorldCon. But my concern wasn't so much that he'd been there and done nothing--so had all of the audience, shock will do that to a person and she had a pretty smooth recovery. My concern was that he'd been there and said nothing publicly in the time between then and now.

But these chicas saying 'rape' need to be slapped in the face. Demeaning, absolutely. Rape, never.

Oh, sorry - meant the award ceremony (though I don't suppose he'd miss that, either).

And, absolutely on the rape statement. I strongly dislike inappropriate use of that word, and these women are definitely misusing it.

Seriously. What Ellison did was really nasty, and I would not have been upset to hear that Connie Willis had popped him one for it. But if there was any rape involved at damn near any con, you can be pretty sure there'd be no shortage of saviours. Gals who say 'rape' when what they mean is 'sexual harassment' make me want to drown things.
(and Gaiman's reply indicated he hadn't heard of the problem until being bombarded with insults and call-outs, so he might actually not have been at the ceremony. I don't know.)
Bad behaviour all around.

Bad behaviour all around.

Exactly.

Also, don't know if this will interest you or not, but here is a report/rant from someone who knows the Willis family.

As do you, so I would be honored.

My journal is much more mundane than recent events would seem to indicate, however. :)
